Human Nature and the way of the Beast

There is an old adage that the more things change, the more they stay the same. The truth is, nothing really ever changes, does it? Perhaps in the sense of time, space, and location it might seem that things change, but they do not. Mountain ranges rise, thrusting their peaks skyward in a powerfull display of earthly ego but these peaks erode and wither away to dust and to some long term observer, they would conclude a semblance of change, and they would be wrong. Those peaks will apear elsewhere, in some form in some fashion, in some place.

Human civilization is no different. Rome rose, collapsed, rose again, collapsed and has now risen again, only to be on the verge on eventual collapse.

Human behavior does not seem to change and while it may contribute to what we see as change in the short viewpoint, in the long term it all becomes the same. Because I can plant a tree, and see that tree bear fruit, it and it’s fruit, is no different than that of a tree planted a thousand years ago.

Change is an illusion!

The stage remains, the characters remain the same, only the actors change and their behavior remains no different, they play their roles no different than their predecessors.

While we have physically evolved, the emotions, thoughts and belief systems have change very little. While I’d agree to an argument  that religion  has changed, I’d add that ‘change’ has only bothered to effect a small number of people. The need for religion has not changed. The overlying arc of who we are as humans has not changed, and cannot change.

The capabilty to do so is beyond us, or hidden from us for some reason.

Take something as destructive as war. You’d think that after the first war some several thousand years ago, people would have got together and started talking about a better way to solve their differences. It didn’t happen than, and it won’t happen now. Why, because power; the need to control, to subject, is to be proven right, is to be given worth, and all those things are powerfull emotions humans cannot control. It is worth taking the chance to lose everything so that you may gain everything if you prevail. It is a need saturated deep in all of use and it is unchanging and it is the beast in us.

O’ My Wicked Soul

With Christmas down the road, I think it’s time to ask, “What carries significance in your life, Religion or Spirituality?”  Yes, I realize you can have both and I hope you realize there is a world of difference between the two. Where Religion values community, Spirituality demands payments from the individual. When I write of demanding payment, I mean to say, that to grow as an individual, to grow the spiritual self, you pay, and sometimes, in consequential ways. Of course, because we are talking about growing as a person, it’s always worth it, isn’t it?

Sometimes I think not!

Where I value the thought and goodwill that the essence of community brings, where I believe that if everyone lived by the beliefs of their respective religions, the world would be a better place. But they don’t, and religion has become just that, a name, a cause with a little ‘r’. Real Religion has to have it at its core, a Spiritual sense. Not of faith because for me, faith is inconsequential, in that there’s no point to it. I believe because I know, because I sense it in every fiber of my wicked soul, that’s my spirituality. I’m so frigging close to God, I can see him, I can smell him and I can reach out and touch him. Of course my God is probably a bit different from yours.

The thing about faith, the thing about religion, is that the principal belief is that man is flawed. That we need a savior. Of course we’re flawed, that’s what makes us who we are. That’s why God intentionally created us with all our wild and crazy imperfections. Not so that we could have faith in him, in God, because God doesn’t necessarily need our devotion as much as we need his. You see, we have it ass backwards about faith, God wants us to have faith, but in ourselves.

He’s good with that.

In fact he mentioned it to me just the other day. Like any Sunday school lesson, you now have your assignment for this Christmas season. Think about growing as a person, about faith, your religion and spitituality and write a paper, 500 words, about their realtionship with each other.

and by the way, Merry Christmas.

If I were King

If I were King, things would be different and I have to believe somewhat better.

There would be no hunger, no poor, no class division. We would treat our eldery, our sick of heart, our sick of mind, our sick of body, different. There would be no predijuce, no hate toward those who are different, those who are different of skin, different of belief, different of love. If I were king there would be no need for abortion, all children would be valued, would be loved.

If I were King,  there would still be rape, crime and hate in the hearts of man but only in the minds of little men, and they would know how little they were.

If I were King, your responsibility would be to dream. To dream of a better life, and to make it so. To spread the word, to make it so.

If I were King, there would be no more wars, but I would know, war lives in the hearts of some men, and we would know these men and they would know.

If I were King, education would be paramount in that education serves our souls, serves our faith and indeed, serves our spiritual needs.

If I were King, you would rule by my side.

Ok, I’m done preaching, done proselytising, done trying to win you over. I get it, I live in  my personal frigging world and none of my world is wanted or desired in yours. Hell, I’ll even admit, my world isn’t perfect but at least we try to do something. How would I do things different, well that’s going to be the topic of the next couple of posts. For starters, what would I do different with foreign policy? How would I approach our military- industral complex? In what way does education effect everything we do? What can we do to make sure people have enough to eat without burdening the tax payer?

Bottom line, we need to start having conversations in this nation, so try this one out for size…

If I were King, we’d start talking about real solutions.

Pretty frickin’ simple, isn’t it?

.

Now, Children.

We are children.

There are those who will disagree, and that is their right but in no way does it diminish the truth that our actions, our very humanity, is totally illustrative of a childish race of imbeciles. For a species which has great potential, one looking from afar can only wonder at our capacity for self-destruction. Like two children fighting over a single toothpick without realizing the entire box is available, we bear witness to god and any other intelligent race out there, that humans just might not survive.

I should explain a bit further.

I find most people smart, intelligent, capable, caring and compassionate, but they are still children. Their behavior is that of children. If it were not the case, the assholes, the bullies of the world would not be running our world, the adults would be.

We are too busy playing, enjoying the fruits of our past and historic labors to indulge in the daily activities that we need to move us further down the evolutionary path of spirit, technology, mind and body. Men rather fish, women shop, as if there’s nothing else to do. It’s all been done, and now it’s time to enjoy being a god, to live the good life. You and your phone! Together. Forever!

I watched the growth of the Tea Party just as I’m watching the Occupy movement flourish.  I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to see the occupy movement succeed. I do, and that is because I’ve followed politics long enough, passionately enough, to know that there’s a lot that just needs changing when it comes to our politics. Everyone in this Nation knows that. Everyone in this Nation agrees with the thought, that something has to change.

And yet, for some reason, there’s an awful lot of people who don’t agree with the occupy people.

The end-all is simple for this kid. I’ve written about the lack of Americans participating in the political process for years and now that we have a disenfranchised middle class that is broke and poor, and screaming for the return of the american dream, now’s the time they should get up off their asses and do something, like supporting those that are spending cold nights on frozen concrete with nothing but the thin vinyl of a cheap tent over their heads.

If you think we need to change some fundamental things in our Government, in our Financial world, then speak up, do something. If you disagree with the occupy movement, than say so, but let us in on what you think we need to do.

Chances are, like children, you’ll just whine.

What I Believe a Liberal is?

I am a liberal because I dream.  I believe humanity has a capable future if people continue to dream. I refuse to submit to any fear that  murders that dream or even manages to warp ones view of their neighbor. Doing so allows the devil to dance a jig with Cuervo in hand. You have to know, that getting there from here isn’t possible without a dream. In fact, you really can’t even get across the road unless you give a thought to doing so, and a dream is nothing more than some really big thoughts. Where you might think to just cross the street, I think I maybe should look both ways before crossing, others might think about actually building a bridge.

I’m getting at a simple philosophical difference between conservatives and liberals.  I dream of a better future, we dream of a better future.

I’m sure conservatives dream too, but there thoughts don’t consider the best that humans have to offer. In fact, their dreams depend on the material stuff. Bank accounts, property and their retention. Now, there’s a lot of liberals that like a nice bank account and own nice cars. In fact, I’m one of them. I readily admit that I like my lifestyle and that I intend to keep it. I don’t live in perpetual fear that socialists are coming to take it away because I too, own a gun.  Recognizing this, also recognize that it is not my car, my house, my camper, my occupation, that defines who I am as a person. I judge people by what they say, how they say what they say. I judge people by their relationships, by how they treat their spouse, their children, how they treat me. By their actions in relationship to their words!

I believe humans have a future if and only if, we invest in ourselves as opposed to our stock markets. That is my dream. See, I believe in a future where a cultural background of a person doesn’t matter, isn’t even considered. I believe in a future where equal opportunities flourish. I believe in a day yet to come where there is no hunger, no poverty. I believe in a  world where the ill of heart, of mind and of body, will be tended to with compassion and sincerity without thought of financial or social status. I believe in a day I will never see in my lifetime when humans will fulfill their potential, a thousand, thousand years from today. Humans will awake one day, to find their place in the universe, because I dream today.

Pretty Simple, huh?

Is Herman Cain Right? Blame yourself for being poor?

There is nothing that pisses me off more than some rich dude telling me to blame myself for my lot in life. I’m sorry but screw you and the pizza delivery car you rode in on. Know something, I was willing to listen to you and even give your 9-9-9 plan some consideration. I won’t do that now because you’ve shown your true colors, your complete disregard and disrespect for working class people. If I had ever believed you carried an iota of compassion for me and tens of thousands like me, that belief has evaporated.

I live in a nice residential neighborhood where I’ve raised my children. My wife and I both work, we have always worked. Like everyone else these days, everything we’ve saved is gone and we’ve been reduced to living paycheck to paycheck. We live one paycheck away from the street. That’s not my fault.

It’s yours!

I don’t get how you can use a common sense catch phrase such as “Everyone needs to be responsible” that appeals to everyone’s basic instinct of fairness, and turn that phrase into a condemnation of the poor, the working poor and the working class poor. Talk about invigorating class warfare as a divisive talking point. To spout such nonsense is to deny even a minute amount of respect to those who dig graves, clean toilets, mop floors, babysits our children, bag our groceries, fix our roads, take care of the elderly, work our service counters…

Where would you be Mr. Cain without these people? You accomplished what you have accomplished in your life, because of the multitudes of these people  who do their jobs, day in, day out.  Who made this Nation what it is, and for you to pay them back in such a disresptful manner is nothing less than… unamerican.

And you want to be our next President? Ain’t gonna happen.

An American Fall

I find it disquieting that our national media is struggling to define what the ‘occupy’ movement is.  Disquieting because it’s pretty simple in that people are asking for a conversation about the distribution of wealth. What comes first, profit or people? It’s a fair and equitable demand, to have the conversation. Of course, you and I both know this is a conversation the rich, the powerful simply does not want to begin, much less have. Keep in mind, most media empires fall into the category of  ’the rich and powerful’. The thing is, at some point in time, our media will start paying attention, and seriously, because our media empires are a dying breed. Dying in the sense that if a news media is perceived not to be fair, not to be accurate, there are alternative resources. It’s far too late in the game to say you’ll just pull the plug on the net.

Further, it’s disturbing that our American news media can attribute the role social networking played in the “Arab Spring” and yet can’t conceive that social networking here in the states can lead to change. It can, it will, it is the voice of many speaking as one. It might take a while, but it will happen.

The question is fair. The question is right. And it’s time it was asked!
